For gender diversity in STEM fields

WomInTech aims to challenge gender stereotypes through the lens of the student perspective, fostering a more open and balanced society for tomorrow.

Goals

WomInTech is a student-led initiative dedicated to promoting gender diversity in engineering and, more broadly, in STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

For over 20 years, the Brussels Polytechnic School has seen a plateau of around 20% female students each year. This lack of growth impacts not only the learning environment and diversity within academia, but also the scope of technological innovations that shape tomorrow’s society.

WomInTech aims to break down stereotypes around scientific and technical careers, showing that they are not reserved for an intellectual elite. To achieve this, a variety of initiatives are carried out, all built on a foundation of inclusion and integration—both within ULB and in secondary schools.

Before university

Gender diversity in engineering starts even before university! WomInTech reaches out to prospective students at events such as SIEP and the I Love Science Festival to meet primary and secondary students. Students in years 5 and 6 of secondary school can also participate in WomInLabs, laboratory workshops that offer a taste of civil engineering studies.

Inspiring young girls to pursue a career in science through fun and educational activities is one of WIT's most important missions.

Support for each student

The WomInTech mentoring program is a social support program, through which a first-year student is put in contact with a higher-year student, in order to offer them a point of reference within the faculty and help them integrate.

Safe spaces and team buildings are organized for the mentoring community.
